Behind the Wine - For The Wine Enthusiast

The North East Region of Victoria has several wine regions on offer, including Alpine Valleys, Beechworth, Glenrowan, King Valley and Rutherglen. Yet there are boutique wineries located in other areas of the Region such as Mansfield , Swanpool and Benalla.

For the wine enthusiast, Behind the Wine tour will provide an insight into undiscovered small vineyards and winemakers of the Upper Broken River Valley located close to Swanpool midway between Mansfield and Benalla. The Upper Broken River is the gateway to the North East GIs

The tour will visit the vineyards, have one-on-one discussions with vignerons, winemakers, and the opportunity to purchase wines from boutique winemakers.

The vineyards are in cool climate, have different microclimates, soils and management techniques and produce wines that have both differences and similarities making for a rich learning environment.

A Brief History

The Upper Broken River Valley is located between the Strathbogie and Mt Samaria range close to Lake Nillahcootie (a 40,000 ML reservoir) The valley produces southerly winds that reduce the incidence of frost and the risk of damage during the early stages of growth. Locally produced wines are some of the best in the North East.

Swanpool is located in the heart of the Upper Broken River Valley and provides a very diverse southern gateway to Benalla Rural City. Being in the foothills of the Victorian High Country, the area abounds with natural beauty. To the south, the imposing Mount Samaria reflects in the waters of Lake Nillahcootie. To the west are the Strathbogie Ranges with numerous   walking tracks and bird watchers will be amazed at the variety of bird life that abounds in the district and the surrounding mountain ranges.

The township and the surrounding valleys enjoy fertile soils, temperate climate and reliable rainfall, all combining to provide an ideal environment for production of an extensive range of fresh farm produce. Vegetables, stone fruit, apples, pears, citrus fruit, olives and wine grapes, are just some of the horticulture that is produced prolifically in the area.

Baddaginnie Run Winery

Baddaginnie Runs vineyards nestle in the foothills of the Strathbogie Ranges in Victoria,   in a beautiful healthy valley.

The secret to their wines exceptional quality is the health of our land’s ecosystems. Land health is directly linked to biodiversity, which in turn depends on the level of native flora cover across a farm landscape. Today a network of bio-corridors surrounds vineyards, protects waterways and stores huge volumes of carbon

The terroir expressed in their wines comes from a winning set of factors. It combines healthy ecosystems, ancient granitic soils, vibrant wild yeasts, temperate climate and sustainable practices.

Kooyonga Creek Winery

The Kooyonga Creek runs through the Saunder’s property. In the gold-rush days the gemstone Jasper was discovered on the edges and gulley’s of the creek. This precious stone now takes pride and place on the Kooyonga Creek labels today.
